I've been called an old hippie--I grew up in the 60s and subscribed to Mother Earth News, so this sustainability stuff is right down my alley. I recycle and compost (I recently asked my husband for a second bin as a birthday present--he thought I was kidding!). My 'regular' garbage can rarely gets to the curb more than half full. I have three raised veggie beds (8' long, 2' wide and 3' high) plus extra planters where I grow veggies and fruits. I hope to add three or four or more of these to an area on the side of the house. I have a Meyer lemon, a lime, and a ruby grapefruit tree, I've made my own limoncello, lemon jelly, and lemon marmalade and am considering investing in a small freezer because I sometimes don't have enough room in the one that's part of the fridge, especially if it's been a good year for tomatoes. Oh, and I've got a solar system on my house. Last year my electricity cost me about $200.00 for the whole year. I would do more, but I can't afford a hybrid vehicle (my 11-year-old Honda Civic gets 37 MPG, sometimes even over 40, so I feel the extra expense isn't worth it right now). I looked into tankless water heaters and replacement windows but I felt that they were not the best choice--too expensive in relation to the projected savings. Not that I'm a saint, either. I know I could do more. Hmmmmm. Sounds like a good New Year's resolution, eh?
